Understanding the "Power to gas" concept

To convert renewable power surplus into green hydrogen and synthetic methane

The Power to Gas concept is based on converting electricity surplus from renewable sources into gas.

Electricity is firstly converted to hydrogen by water electrolysis. The hydrogen acts as an energy carrier which can be injected  into the gas network. And secondly this hydrogen can be combined with CO2 to produce synthetic methane by CO2 methanation and also injected it into the gas grid. This second step is of particular interest as regards CO2 utilization approach. The Power to Gas addresses several markets of different sizes and maturity: massive storage of electricity surplus, grid balancing services, prevent the need of local investments in the power grid, low-carbon mobility (CNG or H2 vehicles), industrial use of hydrogen and methane, etc.

GRTgaz and its partners are involved in the "Jupiter 1000" project at the Fos sur Mer harbour nearby Marseille (Department of Bouches-du-Rhône in France) on a platform dedicated to demonstration projects devoted to the Energy Transition. The project is located at the intersection of gas and electrical networks and close to an industrial source of CO2. With a power of 1MWe, the JUPITER unit will allow an assessment of the Power to Gas technology for energy storage, and initiate the development of a new industry.

The project Jupiter 1000 is co-financed by the European Union under the FEDER funds, by the government as part of the "Investissements d'Avenir" program entrusted to ADEME and the Provence-Alpes-Côtes d'Azur regional council.
